Abstract : Democracy in the digital age is undergoing a profound transformation shaped by platform-mediated communication, algorithmic governance, and data-driven power. While digital technologies have expanded political participation and amplified marginalised voices, they have also altered the foundations of democratic deliberation, accountability, and legitimacy. This essay examines four interconnected dimensions of digital democracy: the transformation of the public sphere, the spread of misinformation, the normalisation of surveillance, and the governance of speech by private platforms. Drawing on democratic theory, it argues that the core challenge lies not in technology itself but in the ethical and institutional vacuum surrounding digital power. Algorithmic amplification fragments public discourse and weakens shared epistemic foundations, while misinformation erodes trust in democratic judgment. Pervasive surveillance reshapes political behaviour through subtle forms of control and self-censorship, and private platforms increasingly regulate speech without democratic accountability. These challenges are especially salient in India, where rapid digital expansion has deepened inclusion while intensifying democratic risks. Sustaining democracy therefore requires not only regulation but also civic responsibility, critical judgment, and ethical engagement in digitally mediated public spaces.
