A Tribute to Dr Manmohan Singh

Abstract : Dr. Manmohan Singh, the 13th Prime Minister of India was an academician, bureaucrat and politician known for his integrity, quiet determination, intellectual rigor, cautious diplomacy, and steady economic stewardship. He was known for his testament to the power of intellect, humility, and perseverance. As a distinguished economist he was an architect of India's economic renaissance and transformation. India will remember him for his pivotal role in the implementation of economic reforms. Dr. Singh’s true mettle came to limelight in 1991 as a finance minister in the Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao’s regime. It was because Indian economy was grappling with a severe economic crisis, severe balance of payments crisis, high inflation, and a rapidly depreciating rupee against US dollar he brought economic reforms to our country. His policies were unique and departed from his political parties’ ideologies and brought many subtle changes and also instrumental for transforming India into one of the world's fastest-growing economies. His stewardship laid the foundation for a new and dynamic India, fostering rapid growth and integration into the global economy. Dismantling of Industrial licensing system, slicing of MRTP Act, devaluation of the rupee, reduction of tariffs, deregulation of industries, and opening up the economy to global trade and investment, inclusive growth, poverty alleviation, enhancing India's global presence, strengthening Indo-US relations, helped to steer India away from the balance of payments crisis, and a combination of fiscal stimulus and prudent financial management are some of his notable contributions to our country. As Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014 to achieve significant achievements was observed by giving momentum to economic growth, technological advancement, and improvements in education and infrastructure. Dr. Manmohan Singh’s contributions in foreign policy initiatives like strengthening ties with the United States and improving good relations with neighbouring countries and also marked a new phase in better international relations. His vision for India was always one of inclusivity, with an emphasis on improving education, healthcare, and social welfare. Even in the face of political opposition, Singh remained committed to the path of growth, social equity, and international engagement. Dr. Manmohan Singh's personal integrity, humility, compassion and unwavering dedication to public service are his remarkable qualities that will cherish and continue to inspire generations and also remembered forever. His leadership panache was marked by his calm, deliberative approach, focused consensus-building and long-term solutions rather than short-term political gain and also for setting the strong path for India’s future.
